The worst performers of the session were Nikon Corp. (T:), which fell 4.90% or 70.0 points to trade at 1359.0 at the close. Astellas Pharma Inc. (T:) declined 2.72% or 52.0 points to end at 1857.5 and Fanuc Corp. (T:) was down 2.19% or 460.0 points to 20570.0.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 1844 to 1685 and 272 ended unchanged.

Crude oil for February delivery was down 0.10% or 0.06 to $61.12 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Brent oil for delivery in February rose 0.11% or 0.07 to hit $66.61 a barrel, while the February Gold Futures contract fell 0.08% or 1.25 to trade at $1483.15 a troy ounce.
USD/JPY was down 0.09% to 109.27, while EUR/JPY fell 0.12% to 121.47.
